Yes, I tried unchecking it and checking it again to see if ot would
somehow "recapture" the relationships, no dice. Sorry, I forgot to
mention that in my post.

Do you have relationships defined in the back-end? They might have gotten
lost in the split, and to be useful, they have to be in the database where
the data resides.

Once enabled it will only have an affect on NEW queries that you create.
Did you try that? It won't insert lines on Queries already saved.

Yes I did.
I've also tried to repair both databases. No Dice.
I also linked the tables from the backend into a blank database- same
problem.
I converted the databases to 2003, now it works fine again (not an
option right now though).
I created dummy front end and back end databases (97) with
relationships defined in the backend, then linked into the front end -
again the grid works just fine. So it appears to be something to do
withe the backend mdb file, but I'm not sure what.
