I just started using Access 07 and noticed today when I save a database as
another name it reduces the new file size by half of the original's.  For
example I have 2 database files, "Project 1 original" and "Project 1
working".  Say I make some changes to Project 1 working and want to save this
as the original, the "working" database is 1024kb.

I hit the office button and go to Save As and choose the "Project 1
original" file, Access asks me if I want to overwrite the file and I say Yes.
I get an original file that is 612kb.  This happens every time.  Any idea
why?

Access has always been lousy at housekeeping. When you work in a
.mdb, the program needs temporary diskspace to store results for
queries, indexes, wizards, and such. It neglects to release that
space when it closes. When you do a Save As, Access only copies
the stuff it really needs.

You can reduce the size of your original file too. From the
menu, select Tools->Database Utilities->Compact (and Repair. in
the newer versions)
