XP is an operating system.  Microsoft Office is a collection of applications
including Word, Excel, Outlook, and a few others.  The exact programs depend
on the version of Office.  In any case, it needs to be purchased separately
from XP.

No, it doesn't. XP Home is the "operating system" - the environment in which
programs run. Office is a collection of programs (which must be purchased
separately).
