"Reserved Error (-1517) - there is no messsage for this error"

I got this error, any clues as to possible causes?
I went into my main screen, specified a filter of 'all records', the screen
returned over 40,000 records, then I clicked on the navigation button to go
to the last record. That is when I got the error.

Compacting both back and front and and refreshing the table links solved the
problem (found solution in an earlier post - thanks Joan Wild).
