Jet Engine Database Problem

For some reason, when I try to open my database, it displays a message
saying that there is a problem with the Jet Engine Database being able
to open the file, because someone else is trying to use it at the same
time. But this is not the case. I've even shut down every computer on
the network (6 of them) and then restarted and I still get the same
error.

Has anybody else had this issue before?

With all copies of Access closed on each PC that hits your database, do you
see a left-over file of the same name, but with the .ldb extension? If so,
try deleting this file. It is usually only 1 KB in size. You may need to
reconfigure Windows Explorer in order to see the file extensions and file
sizes.

Is your database split into a front-end (FE) and back-end (BE) files? If so,
does each user have their own copy of the FE file on their local hard drive?

Splitting a database is mentioned in the second paragraph.

Your issue could also be related to corruption. See symptom #10 in this
listing on Access MVP Tony Toews web site:

Finally, if you suspect corruption, you can try using the method that I show
at the bottom of page 3 of a Word document that I call Access Links.doc. You

If this is due to memo field corruption, try the directions shown in the
link in item #10, in Tony's document.

I am not good in database, but still I can give you a suggestion. I had once
this type of problem, when accidentally I set the Record Lock property 'Yes'
in design mode for one of my reports. You can check your forms.....Reports
whether any of them has the record lock property set to Yes.

Hi Magmike,

You might (?) have luck by creating a new database, and attempting to import
as much as possible from your database. Otherwise, your two choices include
restoring from a recent backup (hopefully, creating backups is a part of your
standard operating procedure), or having a professional recovery service
attempt to repair your database.

At this point, you should only work on a copy of your database, so that in
the event that you need a professional recovery service, you won't have made
matters worse by continuing to attempt any operations with the file. A very
good and reputable service is run by Peter Miller (PK Solutions). Contact

There is a tool called Advanced Access Repair. I have used it to
repair many corrupt Access MDB files on my damaged disks successfully.
