MS Access Forum / General 2 / April 2008Access 2007 database with Vista Platform
I have a database in Access 2007, converted from 2003, and am trying to run it with a Vista platform. I have added its folder to the trusted sites and therefore do not get the "stop all macros" message. But..... (BTW, I have very successfully executed this 2007 database on an XP platform but when I attempt it on a Vista platform it will not work.) Upon execution, I get the infamous error message "Read Only This database has been opened read-only. You can only change data in linked tables......." I am not trying to design just run, changing data in the linked tables. So I ignore the message but am NOT able to change any data in linked tables. I must run it in the original folder and therefore do not want to copy it to some other folder. ???? I am using the built-in switchboard an am able to navigate through it without difficulty. However, when I try to view my main edit screen, it appears totally blank except for the specified background. I have search the internet without success to resolve this problem. This is a completely different form"trusting" the folder. You have to give a higher access level to the Windows account you are using to the app's folder. Is the app folder under Program Files by any chance? Vista doesn't like any data files in there. It expects that to be strictly executables. I don't see the two files as being "data" but I'm new to Vista and maybe it does consider them to be data. I really do not want to move them but will if necessary. Where would you suggest for me to put the School folder? In the root directory"? Or, in My Documents? Thanks again for the help! Or, in My Documents? You don't have to move them. You can just elevate the privileges that the current user account has to the School folder. Then the read only stuff should go away. Thank you! Thank you! Changing the privileges did the trick. Turning off the UAC , as was also suggested, fixed it but I did not like to do it for a customer's computer. That's a bit like turning off the complex and expensive burgler, fire and smoke alarm system rather than adjusting the settings so the cat doesn't set it off... SignatureJohn W. Vinson [MVP] if your database is split into a front end and a back end-- then you should move it to ADP. Linking tables is no longer the way to work with Access Applications. Upsize the databse on the Access 2003 side; and then open the app in Access 2007. Then you don't need to worry about security in 12 different places-- just in one place- on the db server. Most of these problems occur because of Vista security and/or User Account Control. Try, temporarily turning off UAC (in the control panel) and see if that helps.
