Field suddenly changed to symbols now crashes db

I had a field in one record that suddenly changed into
boxes and characters indicitive of encryption.  Now when I
change the field it immediately crashes the database.  
Entire record is connected to several other related
tables. Would like to save it if I can.

It is likely to be corruptions in your database.  See Tony Toews' article:
