Open the report in design view.
In the Properties box, on the Other tab, set the Vertical property to Yes.
Then resize the label/text box.
Some versions of Access have problems with displaying the fonts vertically.
If you run into this problem, change the font to Arial CYR.

thanks this works for the data that is displayed in the report however the
column headings cannot be set to vertical as there is no option to do this?

Hi Sharan,
Are you referring to the Label (Shows the name of the field)? If so, Open
you report in design view drag down the Detail Bar to open the space, click
on the label and go into the properties. Use the Width and Height fields to
adjust your label. OR, drag down the Detail Bar to open the space, click on
the label and left click and hold the center square on the top border line
and drag it up and the grab the middle square of the right boder line left
click and hold and drag it in(or to the left). This should do the trick.

what if the labels are not in the "Detail" Section but are in the "Page
Header" section. i tried moving the labels into the "Detail" section however
the labels keep appearing for every row that appears in the report!is there a
way of showing the column labels just once?

Your labels should be in the Page header section and you don't want to move
them in the detail section unless you want your report designed that way.
Sometime if I have a lot fields on a report I will put my labels in the
detail section because it makes it easier to view but it's all personal
preference. I only told to move the detail bar down because there is more
room go down than moving the page header up because then you'll be squeezing
the report header section. But if that's easier for you then do that. In
either case, your main objective is to open the space between the Page Header
and Detail section. Whichever bar you decide to drag to accomplish this is
will give you the same end result. However, your report title will have less
room and may not look the way you want when you view the report. It may look
too scrunched. Let me know how you make out.
