Little boxes instead of tab

I put chr(9) or vbtab into a report, and it both displays on screen and
prints out as a little black empty square box.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how I stop it.

It is happening because standard controls can't display a tab as a tab. You
can stop it by using a number of spaces rather than Chr(9).
