I have sorted a report alphabetically, by prefix. AA, AB, AC, etc.  How do I
label the header to show the category of records.  I know if I copy the field
that is sorted into the header, it will show the first record, and if I could
format that record to display only the first two characters, that would work.
How do I do this?

If you want to show the prefix (since we have no idea what the "category of
record" is based on the limited information in your post), you'd put the
same thing you did in your sorting and grouping box to get it to sort and
group by prefix.  It is most likely something like...

=Left([SomeFieldName],2)
