In a report (directory on members) I would like to omit (trim) lines that
have no content. What do I need to put in the detail section of the report
and what property will leave out empty records? As on a mailing label.

Look at the "can grow" and "can shrink" properties.

One option is to make all your controls zero-height and set the "can grow"
to true.
