Using Internet replication, the router has to have ports 20 and 21
redirected to the server running the synchronizer. ReplMan won't
known anything about the firewall -- it should be configured exactly
the same was it would be without the firewall (unless that changes
the IP address or the host  name being used).

Using indirect replication, you really need a VPN to run it across
the Internet, which means a port open for the VPN connection. Many
routers/firewalls, including inexpensive consumer-level products
like those from LinkSys, have VPN support.
