Lost Indirect Replication

A user has a weird problem. They sometimes can send indirect replica
messages to other synchronizers and sometime not. They can directly
replicate if they open access itself but not through the replication
manager.

They were working fine until a bit after installing Windows XP SP2.

I've watched the replica send a message to the server and the server read
it, but that's as far as it goes.

Could it be the XP SP2 firewall blocking a port or protocol or something?
It's like it can see the folders but something blocks every request in
reply. I've tested the drop box on the replica and the server can create a
text file and edit it as well. So it's not like the sever doesn't have the
rights.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Can the server see the remote pc's drop box by name
i.e. \\remotepcname\drop
and the remote PC see the servers drop box by name
i.e. \\servername\drop

If this is not the case then replication messages may but never complete.

What error messages do you get ?

The PC can see the server's drop box name, but the server cannot see the
PC's until I enter the PC's IP address at the server. I think the problem
relates to the PC not announcing itself to the network once the VPN is
established.

The error message from the PC is "replication in progress" as it sends fine
but never receives a reply. The server error is cannot connect to
\\remotepcname\drop.

Can the server see the remote pc's drop box by name
i.e. \\remotepcname\drop
and the remote PC see the servers drop box by name
i.e. \\servername\drop

If this is not the case then replication messages may but never complete.

Unless both PC's can see the others drop box by name synchronisation will
not work.

Once the VPN is connected try Opening a windows explorer on the client PC
and go to the Menu Tools/Synchronize and synchronise all items. once that
has finished see if the server can see the clients dropbox by name.

Yeah I did that and they can, but still fails. From the server side, error,
from the client side, error or "In Progress".

We just setup another local PC yesterday to be WinXP SP2 with the firewall
on. The PC's is visible from the network as is it's drop box. I can
understand possible VPN problems but this PC is local to the network, plus
it was working under Windows 2000...?

Again I can directly sync fine, but with indirect it just has lots of "In
Progress" messages. I've tried indirect replication to other machines that
are working but no luck as its the same as with the server.

I thought it might be a synchronizer/WinXP Firewall problem so I added
mstrans40.exe to the exceptions list but no success so far. Would I need to
reboot the machine to enable the exception?

Unless both PC's can see the others drop box by name synchronisation will
not work.

Once the VPN is connected try Opening a windows explorer on the client PC

If both PC's can see the others drop box by name confirm that both the
server has enough rights on the client Drop box folder and share and the
client has enough rites on the servers drop box folder and share. From both
PC's try creating a file in the other PC's drop box while accessing it by
netbios name.

Try looking in the Synchronizer.log . if you are getting a lot of 'Reason =
Invalid destination path' errors then it does imply that there are
networking issues that must be sorted out.

Yep, I can confirm that be creating and editing a text file from each
machine to the other's drop box.

One sec! I just checked again and the security was only allowing read
access...? Too many IT cooks in this network kitchen, I'm starting to think.
I've set the client dropbox folder to read/write for everyone and
indirection replication works fine again.Oh dear!

Sorry for the drama and thanks for the help.
