I am using the results of a query (sometimes a field in a table) as the
search creteria in another query. Sometimes I am successful and sometimes I
get the parameter query prompt. What am I inadvertently doing to get the
mixed results?

When I get that problem it is usually because I have misspelt something or
have a unintended blank somewhere.
