I built a query with a parameter. Then I built a Form from the query with
the parameter, I put a button on the form to go to a word document using
the Mail merge wizard. When I open the word document my mail merge buttons
in Word are ghosted out. This only happens when I have the parameter in the
query. It does not happen when i take the parameter out. What do I need to
do to make the letter work. I only want to view certain records in the
database.

You can't use a parameter query from word mail merge.

You can apply criteria to a table or query (without parameters) from word.
