ALL,

Please help.  I am trying to set up a database (actually,
it is set up) across Windows 95,98,NT,2K, and XP
machines.  I have the security removed because it was
giving me too many problems.  I can get it to work with
the NT, and XP machines or I can get it to run on multiple
98 machines, but if one of the 98 machines has the db
open, then the XP and NT machines can't open it, I get the
already open message... Anyone have any idea or code as to
how to unlock records so that multiple platforms can
address?  One other problem.. I am using Access 97 with
Jet Engine 2.0 on all the machines.  My company is Very
cheap and won't spring to bring all machines up to the
same level.  PLEASE HELP!!!

The OS is likely not the issue.  Do all users have the same permissions to the
*folder* where the mdb resides?

Also, if you still have problems, what kind of server are you running?

We have a Novell network like you describe, without
any problems.  (If it is Novell, set the 's' Shared
flag, clear the 't' Transactional flag)

We never got Win 2K server to work correctly with
mixed clients that included Win 95  (although the
db was ok as long as ONLY Win 95 clients were attached)
But that was a long time ago: Win2K has had some work
done on it since then.

And what is this:

A97 is jet 3.5. What is using Jet 2.0, and why?

Folks,

Thanks for you help, We are running an NT Server because
our IT lady hasn't had training on 2003 (which we have a
license for).  Turns out, that wasn't the problem.  For
all the other people that have these same problems... Make
sure if the FE and the BE files are in different folders,
that all the individuals have read, write, (full control)
of those directorys.  That was my problems (I feel kinda
dumb after resolving the issue).. Thanks for all the posts.

Actually you will probably run into problems if you are sharing the FE -
it should be in a separate folder or computer for each user.

The important part was read, write, delete permissions to the
directories.

However you really want to put the FE on each machine or place in a
user specific directory on the server.   This will help avoid some
weird error messages when users are changing the same forms record
source, filters and such as well as corruptions.

I specifically created the Auto FE Updater utility so that I could
make changes to the FE MDE as often as I wanted and be quite confident
that the next time someone went to run the app that it would pull in
the latest version.  For more info on the errors or the Auto FE
Updater utility see the free Auto FE Updater utility at
http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/autofe.htm at my website to keep the
FE on each PC up to date.

Nothing dumb about your questions at all.
