When I save my access work to a disc, it makes it read-
only.  I want a back-up disc that I can work from.

Also, when I open my work in access, it blocks the
screen.  I can't exit the program without turning off the
computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Let me guess, by "disk", you mean "CD". Yes, indeed, even saving to a CD-RW
makes the files "read only" in versions of Windows before Windows XP. Copy
the file to the hard-drive, right-click, and uncheck "Read Only". If that
doesn't work, then we'll need some more background on what you have and what
you're doing.
