I have a access mde front end deployed over citrix with a mdb be on a file
server. This application is used in various operating rooms in our hospital.
I'd like user's to be able to access the application (via citrix) over a
wireless LAN as the nurses who enter data in the app during procedurec would
like to do so on mobile workstations (rolling carts). Using a wireless LAN
with a wirelss router (which contects to our wire based LAN) in each OR seems
like a good way to it.
I've read on AM that this may not be a good idea as wireless conectivity is
not as reliable as our ground based LANs. I'm wondering if with the set up as
I described it, would I be better off making the RN's drag around a LAN line
conected to the mobile work station?
thanks for your imput, I love this web site! Rob

Unless they need to know what the other nurses have updated, I think you'd
be best off using replication. Once they're back to their desk, they can
hook up to the LAN and update the master database.

I'd rather not do replication as I have little experience with it and the
RN's do need to see updates to the schedule, etc. So even with the set up as
I described you think it would be too risky? If so, I'll have them drag
around a LAN line. Thanks in advance.Rob

Wireless connectivity from the mobile workstations actually running
Access MDB/MDE's to a file server is strongly not recommended.
However if the mobile workstations are connecting to Citrix servers
via wireless then that's just fine. We recommend folk who need to use
wireless to user either Terminal Server/Citrix or SQL Server.
<digression>This assumes, of course, that the Terminal Server/Citrix
servers aren't in turn using wireless to connect to the file server.
However that is exceedingly unlikely. <smile> And any IT folks which
do so should really consider a career in, ummm, hmm I was going to
suggest a very large corporate hog farm but that would be unfair to
the hogs.
(I have relatives who run hog farms. As a teenager I spent two
summers feeding hogs and cleaning hog barns with a snow shovel and
wheel barrow.) </digression>

Thank for your feed back. We will proceed as planned with the citrix set up
as I described it and with the wireless routers in each of the OR's. Thanks
again, Robert

Tony
what is strongly reccomended is that you STFU and learn the simple benefits
of SQL Server.
it's free-- it doesn't corrupt data on wireless, it supports WAN and VPN
I mean DUH!

If your using citrix....then you much home free. Even a total break in the
connection, or hitting the re-set button on your client computer will NOT
hurt this.
In fact, if you accidentally pull the plug on the client computer...you
simply re-boot..and launch the remote desktop...you be resumed exactly were
you left off..
your use of citrix is ideal...and especially when you using wireless...
Access never makes the trip down the wire...and thus your safe....

Well, that's assuming that the Citrix server is configured to not
close a session when the connection is dropped.

Citrix is not IDEAL
Citrix is not NECESSARY
what are you database dorks making commission off of this guy or something?
you just need a decent SQL Server developer and ADP

If they are running it via Citrix Terminal Server, then there's no
issue. The issue with Access and wireless is with an Access front
end connected across a wireless connection to a Jet back end. If the
back end is SQL Server or some other server database, it's not an
issue. And if you're not connecting across the wire (as you are not
with a remote session running on Windows Terminal Server or Citrix),
then it's also not an issue.

What website? You're using a website that republishes public Usenet
groups that are available without using that website at all. I'm not
pleased that sites like Access Monster are repackaging Usenet
content as though it's their own -- it's misleading, in my opinion,
and borderline copyright violation.

David, I should have said website(s). I use both access monster and the
microsoft access user formum. So I love them both because they've been
extremely helpfull to me (primarily msa user forum.) I'm just a application
developer so I don't know re: am and Usenet stuff. But I know I've been
helped by both because not everything that appears on msa user forum appears
on ma and visa versa.
My intent was just to say thank you to all of you who have helped me so very
much.
Thanks again,
Rob

But I use the MS newsgroups and don't use a website to get them
(thank heavens!).

you can't use Wireless with Access databases
you'd be better off moving to Access Data Projects and SQL Server
It just amazes me -- if your database is too much of a wimp to support
wireless then you need a skills upgrade
