'Not having permission or database has been opened exclusively'

My clients are used to sharing a db built in version 2000.  I built them a
new one built in 2003, 2000 format.  The user on the PC where the db resides
opens it OK.  The second user can open it once.  Subsequent tries elicit a
" not having permissions or the database is opened exclusively", or even a
"Access cannot find pathname for S/:MyDocuments/Shows/db.mdb".  Copying and
renaming the database permits another round where both users can open it
once.  On the earlier version db, the ldb file opens and closes as expected.
The new file is set to open shared.   I suspect this is a version issue?
What to do?  I saw the response to the FE,BE problems on network post, but
my users can open and use other files in the target folder including the old
Access databases.

Thank you in advance,
Claudette Hennessy

Since users can open other files in the folder, I'd assume that the permissions are set correctly, but it's worth a
look. Rightclick on the folder and review the Security settings of the folder hosting the database, make sure the
appropriate groups have REad/Write/Create/Destroy permissions on the folder (so they can manipulate the .ldb lock file).

Next make sure that users aren't defaulting to opening the database in Exclusive mode. This is a per-user setting, so if
you have a user who locks others out review the settings on their machine, in their Access program.

You have a network problem. Make sure that your server
has all service packs applied: it looks like you missed something.
This should have been fixed six months or a year ago.

Do your clients all have Access 2003?
