Auto FE Updater problem

I recently set up Tony Toews Auto FE Updater on our network to
distribute new FEs of an application I created for my church. Neat
utility, and really like the way it works but I am having a couple of
problems with it. I sent Tony some email directly about some of the
problems, but another problem has cropped up and I thought I'd post
here to see if anyone has any suggestions.

There are about 20 workstations using this app, although most have read
only access. The BE mdb is located on a Novell 5.1 server. There are 7
Win98 workstations, the rest are WinXP. I had problems with 2 of the
Win98 workstations -- the updater simply will not work on those
machines. I get an error from the updater that the account
name/password aren't valid. (This is a secured database.) I know from
Tony's site that there have been some problems deciphering passwords,
and these two workstations are going to get updated later in the year
to XP machines anyway, so I decided I could live with that for now,
since it was working everywhere else.

Then yesterday, two of the WinXP workstations started having problems.
When they click on the shortcut they now get a MS Access error message:

Microsoft access cannot find the file
"H:\Users\1bofe\1BofE\Fbcwkgrp.mdw". It is required for startup.

This error message is NOT from the updater itself, as the password
error messages were, but from Access (Access opens on the workstation).
The path listed there is the correct path to the mdw file, and it is
working fine on the other workstations. I created another shortcut that
points to the location of Access, the location of the local copy of the
mde file, and uses the exact same path above with the wkgrp switch, and
THAT shortcut works fine on these workstations, so the actual path is
not the problem.

So I now have 4 workstations that will not update -- and these 4 are
the ones that need it the most, naturally. If I can't resolve this I
may have to look for other solutions. If anyone has any suggestions I
would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Hi,
on workstations, where updater does not work - do you have full access to
H:\Users\1bofe\1BofE\ directory? and to Fbcwkgrp.mdw file?
perhaps not enough permissions to access this folder

Yes, all users have full read/write permissions to the folder. They have
been accessing the db in that folder for years with no problem (until
recently the FE was on the server in that folder along with the BE and
mdw file and everyone logged into it there), and in fact the Auto FE
Updater worked for the first few days with no problem. And they can
still run the app from their computers using that mdw file as long as it
isn't done thru the Updater!

Very Odd!

I spent some more time today working on the two computers that have had
the problem and I am more confused than ever now. The problem seems to
be intermittant. And it also occasionally affects the other shortcuts I
have set up for them to use to open the database, which bypasses the
updater ini file and just opens the mdb directly.

I begin to wonder if this is some kind of weird network connectivity
problem -- although it hit both of them on the same day, after being
able to open the mdb over the network for almost 8 years with no problem
(prior to using the updater utility)! And it doesn't seem to affect
their ability to open other files from the server, including other,
unsecured, databases.

At any rate, I begin to think now that whatever the problem is, it
probably doesn't have anything to do with Tony's updater utility.

If anyone has any thoughts about what *could* be causing this I'd be
glad to hear it.

Thanks,
Judy

Needless to say this isn't making any sense.   Could you email me your
INI file?

Thanks, Tony

No it isn't making any sense! But I have also decided that it has
nothing to do with the updater (although I will post my ini file at the
end of this email.)

Since posting my previous messages I have done further work on this and
the two machines that are getting this error message now get it
regardless of how they try to connect. I set up 3 different shortcuts on
one of the computers: one that uses the ini file and goes thru the
updater, one that points explicitly to the location of Access, the
location of the local copy of the mde file and the location of the mdw
file on the server, and another that is the same except that it points
to the location of the master mdb file on the server (and this is the
way all the users have been accessing the database for the last 8 years,
and have never had this error message before!) When it isn't working, it
won't work with any of these shortcuts!

The only thing so far that as worked on those two machines is to place a
copy of the mdw file on their local computer, which is obviously NOT
what I desire to do.  I have one other computer now, the one I use for
development work, which is also occasionally popping up with this error,
but it seems to be intermittant. All three of these machines are running
XP Pro SR2. None of the Win98 machines have so far had this error, to my
knowledge. At least two other WinXP machines have NOT had the problem,
and I hope to test others today.

Bottom line is that the problem apparently has nothing whatsover to do
with your updater utility. This database has been in use for 8 years,
with the files in the same locations they are now (except for now having
an mde file on each workstation) and this problem only cropped up last
week, shortly after setting up the Updater, which is why I assumed that
was the cause.

I have checked permissions, and even though the users had implicit
permissions for the folder as part of a group, I went ahead and granted
them explicit permissions, but that made no difference. (And I know one
of the gals was able to go to a different computer--Win98--and log in
and had no problem there, so it is specific to the computers, not the
accounts.)

I have a whole list of things to look into as I have opportunity --
virus software, Microsoft updates, Windows firewall, other software that
may have been installed, etc. etc. No clue how/why any of these could be
the problem but it seems it must be something specific to these
computers which has changed to cause this.

Sorry for the length of this post! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Judy
