This is a home networked computer - all other machines on this network
are fine.  The slowness is in booting up through the login procedure (8
minutes after the wallpaper color changes until I can begin to open a
window).  Then it may take from 20 seconds to 1 minute for a new window
to open.  The menus from the menubar also take 17 seconds to appear.

This problem developed all of a sudden tonight (except for the slow
booting which has been around for several months).  What did I do
tonight?  O.K., I began to load the software for dsl with SBC/Yahoo.
It said to disable the firewall (zone alarm) and then reboot.  So I
did. Of course, it came right back up enabled.  Don't know if this is
related to the problem or not. Went on with installation after that.
Now the network is lightening fast if you can get the browser to even
open.
