Hi,

I have a small roof inspection company.  The basic set-up is a customer
calls and request an inspection.  At this point my office staff will input
into access the following:
   1.  Address
   2.  Customer Name
   3.  Customer Phone Number
   4.  Inspection Date
Now the inspector will go out and inspect the roof.  After the inspection
the inspector will input the results into access.  Then an estimate will be
generated through access and sent to the customer.  If the customer accepts
an invoice will be generated through access.  And, finally once the customer
has paid a certificate will be generate through access and sent to the
customer.

This set-up has worked well so far, but now I want to be able to do some of
this off-site and print the estimate, invoice and certificate from the
actual job site and then return to my office and update the database on both
the office computer and the laptops.  So my question is can this be done and
how much would it cost to have a db developer code it?

Thanks in advance for the advice,

Rick

If you already have a working application, I suggest that you split it
into a frontend/backend configuration (if you haven't done this
already). See http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/splitapp/index.htm for
why and how.

Once you have split your database, you can use Access' built-in
Replication system to put replicas of your backend database onto each
of your laptop computers. Use the replicas as if they were your
conventional database. Periodically, you connect your laptops to your
office network and synchronize the replicas so they all contain
identical information. (Replication is designed for data only and is
not recommended for forms, queries, reports, etc. That's why it is
important to split prior to replication.)

See
http://www.access-experts.com/default.aspx?selection=TutorialReplication&sm=18
for information about replication.

www.trigeminal.com is the best source for high-end information about
replication.

You can do it yourself, especially if you designed your original
application.
