Our company wants to share a ms access database. We are
currently in the process of getting a network server and
place some softwares there. We want to share a ms access
database by placing it on the network server so that the
users can use the same data. Do we create a shared folder
there on the server and share it? Do the user's computers
have to have the network version of MS Access? The user's
computers are going to have either Win 2000 or XP and all
the computers are going to have MS Office 2000 or XP.
Hi Joe,
1) you need to split the data from the code into a data and a code
container. See Tools > Database Utilities > Database Splitter and help files
for a discussion on this.
2) place the data container into a read/write folder on the network
3) each person using the database will require either a full or a runtime
version of MS Access. You can't share the same installation.
4) it is possible for every user to share the same code container from a
networked fiolder (best to mark the file as read only in this case to avoid
locking/crashing/corruption errors) or place a copy of the code container on
each users PC.
Hope this helps, Graeme

Hello Graeme,
You probably don't remember me, but I recently posted two
messages in
regards to sharing an MS Access template named " Asset
Tracking " the comes
with MS Access. Our business wants to use it and share
the database amongst
the users. You replied by saying to use the database
splitter which I tried
to do but I got a message saying that " The database
engine could not lock
table 'Switchboards Items' because it is already in use
by another person
or process". What does it mean by this?

I think the message is caused by having forms open that use the specified
table. Close all open forms and try again [unhide the database window if
it's hidden].

There's an introductory presentation on Access in a Multiuser Environment
that I did for my user group that you can download from
http://appdevissues.tripod.com/downloads.htm . It will identify topics that
I thought worthwhile to discuss, and a bit more. The best collection of
detailed information and links on the subject of Access in the multiuser
environment is at MVP Tony Toews' site,
http://www.granite.ab.ca/accsmstr.htm.
