Hello,
Is there any way to backup the open db before the "Compact on close"
runs?  I want a backup of my db in case compact corrupts it.  I'm using
Access 2002.

Thanks!

Where is the backup saved?  I don't see a copy of the pre-compacted
database in the same folder.  Or are you saying that if the database is
corrupted during the compact, it will not write over the pre-compacted
version?

Yep, Access compacts your current database into another file.
When this was succesfull it will get rid of the old version and rename the
new file.
