Is there a domain function similar to SUM that can be used to concatenate
text of a field?

Such that one can query the table
ID Name
1  a
1  b
2  c
2  d

to make query result look like
ID  Name
1   a, b
2   c, d

Hi Howard

If [a] = John  and [b] = Smith   -     NewfieldName:[a]&" , "&[b] will give
you
NewfieldName:[John , Smith]

Can you tell me what the

1
1
2
2

are as a bit confused - are they field names or content

Quoting Duane Hookom

I use a generic Concatenate() function. The url is listed below with both
ADO and DAO. There are comments regarding which lines to comment or
uncomment based on which library you prefer. Access 97 is mostly DAO while
the default for 2000 and newer is ADO.

Hi John,
I used Duane's function, but had encountered a problem.  I have posted the
problem to Duane (if you search 'howardlihz" In: Access Database Query, you
can find my problem).  It would be great if you could give answer as well.
Any reason why no Domain functions for text?
Thanks

Re: No domain functions for text.

While some of the domain functions do work with text, others make no sense.
Max and Min can make some sense with text (as in get the last or first value
in an alphabetized list).  Many of the others don't make sense -  what is
the average of John, Sue, and Bob?  What is the standard deviation?  etc.

Domain functions are math operators.  The math operations are well defined.

You want text operations.  In most cases, text operations are not well
defined and will vary significantly depending on the particular need.  My
opinion is that this will most often require a custom solution.
