Access 2007--Couple of questions...

1. How do I collapse the new ribbon? Can I change the icon size so that
they are not so big?

2. Where did the startup options go?

Two commnets:
1. the new help needs some work. when I click on F1 for help with the a
topic, it takes me to the main help page. I think that the old help engine
was a bit better at finding what I needed when I needed it; but I realize
this is still beta.

2. I'm not sure I like the new DBC. I have to scroll down quite a bit
vertically when dealing with a database with lots of objects, (Even if I have
them grouped by table or if I use custom groups. The nav bar would be better
the icons could be arranged in columns as one resized the nav bar to the
right. As it is, I am switching between views to get where I need to go.

This is the key word: *beta*

Like you I also have two comments:

1. I dont see much use bringing issues/questions of beta software in
newsgroups designed for solving real life production systems. *Beta*
software is really not what we are here for. There are two kinds of us in
this newsgroup - those having problems in real life production systems - and
those potentially having solutions to the problems in real life production
systems. But note that NONE of the two kinds of people in this newsgroup are
using Beta software (there would be no point).

2. I've seen more than a few posts from people using Access 2007 Beta,
asking the kind of trivial questions that shouldnt really be asked by anyone
using *beta* software. I guess the point here is if such trivial questions
throw you off, you really shouldnt be messin around with the *Beta*
software. Wait till Charlie or Delta comes out, maybe? <G>

While I agree with you that m.p.a.gettingstarted probably isn't the best
newsgroup to use for questions about the Beta (since people probably
shouldn't be using the Beta unless they've got some experience with the
product), now that the Beta has been released to the public, Microsoft
expects questions about the Beta to be posted to the "live" newsgroups.

When the product is in "true" Beta, the Beta testers have signed
Non-Disclosure Agreements and are invited to use the Beta newsgroups. Now
that it's a "public" Beta, that's no longer the case.

Since this God Forsaken forum is where the *beta experience website* led me,
this god forsaken forum is where I tried to find some answers. What I got
was bandwidth wasting lectures from a blowhard like you--Go figrue. I've a
suggestion: next time, don't bother responding to questions if you don't
even know that MS is directing beta users to your little fiefdom in the first
place.

Wow, no need to bring God in the mix, He is innocent.

I wasnt specifically directing my post to you. After Doug Steele's post, I
can see that my issue is probably with Microsoft. I think letting a beta
version loose for public consumption is a little misguided and
irresponsible... kinda like Ford Motor Co putting out new cars and let the
consumers *beta test* them to see if the cars would crash.

I've run into more than a couple of people who are *lay* computer users and
are curious about new MS products and decide to download all beta versions
in sight. I just find it interesting that a software company can actually
use the users at large to troubleshoot its products to the extent MS does.
If I have offended you, I apologize. But I stop short of name calling.

I can see why you got flamed on this one, but I also understand your point.
Nonsensical questions and questions that could be answered with a visit to
Help abound in these groups that have nothing to do with beta versions. Some
people are just to lazy to look it up or have deficient problem solving
skills that are really necessary in this line of work.

As to real world. I consider it real world becoming familiar with the
newest products available. If we don't learn and experiment, we will be left
behind. Part of learning and experimenting is asking questions.

Although God may have nothing to do with these news groups, he does smile on
those who willingly take time to help others help themselves.

Amen to that. I recently suggested that a user consider using "filter by
form". The reply was, "What's that? I've never heard of it." There's just
no hope sometimes! ;-)

Hi Immanuel,

Microsoft has not created any special *public* Beta newsgroups for asking questions (something I
disagree with). If you are using Access 2007 (or any of the other Office 2007 products) the programs
take you to the public newsgroups to ask questions. Expect to see many more of these types of
questions.

1. Double click any of the tabs and the whole thing collapses down.
2. Double click any of the tabs again to bring it back.

I don't believe that is possible.

1. Click the Microsoft Office Button Bar (Upper left corner button with the Microsoft logo on it)
2. Click the Access Options area in the bottom right corner of the new file menu that appears
3. Everything you need should be there on the appropriate tabs.

The Help system is still *heavily* a work in progress. There will undoubtedly be more changes and
some final performance tweaks before final release.

Despite your attitude displayed here, I would direct you to the Access 12
Blog site where Eric Rucker offeres insight and the opportunity for beta
users and all interested parties to post thoughts and questions. Hopefully
if you pursue that option you will do sso with proper etiquette.
