Chinese Characters in Database Record

Hi all

We have a split database Access 2000 and one of the users has managed to add
a record displaying Chinese characters!
The problem is that the record cannot be deleted.
The other anomaly is that the fields displaying the chinese characters are
actually selected (usually) from drop down box of currencies e.g. GBP or
USD.
The first entry for the record is a sub-item number, this displays as a
number of squares.  Trying to change this results in the database FE locking
up completely.

Anyone suggest a remedy please?

TIA

First, make a backup copy, as anything else you try may make this worse.
Then, try a compact/repair.

Tried that with no effect!
When I now try to delete the record I receive the error "the search key was
not found in any record"

When I move off this record I receive message "please complete Subitem
Code". This field is a user input identification number.

Anyone else got any suggestions please?

TIA

Phil
