I had to do an Access 97 Database that joined 6 other tables to a maindata
table so I could filter out cases that appeared in the 6 sub tables. Having
done this the rows reduced from 36,000 to around 7,000. However the overall
file size has remained at 13 mgb.Why?

I undrtand that the table became smaller, withe less data,
and you are not talking about using a query.

In that case did you compact your DB after reducing the
data in your table?

How do you compact a Access 97 database?

After updating the main table I deleted the 6 sub tables & reduced the
maindata table down to 7,000 rows.

Open the database you want to compact
On the menu bar select:
Tools ->
DataBase utilities ->
Compact databse

that will do the trick
