I get the error message "this recordset is not updateable"

Presumably you're using a query for this form, and the query's not
updatable.

Take a look at http://www.allenbrowne.com/ser-61.html for some of the more
common reasons.

Thanks Douglas.
Actually I think I figured it out. I was inadvertently trying to split the
date being the table and the query based on the same table. I confused poor
Mr. Access Database. But I have it working now.
