Autonumber within records

I have a record database linked to a name only.
Within the records I want to add issues (which is linked via subform) this
works fine
but my question is this - does anyone know how to make it so the autonumber
works and resets itself for each record?

I have tried it but if i use Autonumber 1-8 on record 1 and then go onto
record 2 it starts with 9?  whereas i want all records to start with 1.
Is autonumber the best choice for use or is their another method that would
get those results?

Thanks,

Neil

You have no control over autonumber.  There will be gaps in the sequence.
You cannot reset it to 1, at least not while there are other records in the
table.  Without knowing more about your database's purpose it is difficult
to say if another method would yield better results.  What do you mean when
you say you have a record database?  Vinyl records?  Database records?
Linked to what name?  Issues?
If you have numbers 1-8 in the autonumber field, you have eight records.
Sounds to me like you could be treating the database as a spreadsheet, but
that is just a guess.  More information is needed.
