I have been trying to work out how to do a mail merge using fields exported
from an Access database to Word. That bit worked. But does anyone know how to
remove 'duplicate' entries where a name might appear more than once in Access
but I wouldn't want to create a letter umpteen times over for the same person?

In Access, create a query that returns all the mailing merge fields.  Then
change the Unique Values property to "Yes" to get unique values.  This query
becomes your source for mail merge.

Good luck
