I've heard rumours of March, but nothing definite has been released.

You do know, I hope, that it's going to be free?

Yep I knew it was going to be free (AFTER buying a MSDN subscription!)

Don't quite understand the holdup. I am sure it is just a compile-time
option.

Well not quite.   They are basically recreating the install routine
that Office uses that is Access specific and making sure the
appropriate runtime registry settings are correct.   This changes from
each version of Access to the next.   While there would be a lot of
similarities there would also be a lot of differences.
