Have set up a new installation using the Packaging Wizard, could you please
list the service packs that need to be run after installation of runtime.

Am using Access XP on Windows XP or Windows 2003 machines.

AFAIK, Office Update works on Runtime just as well as Retail versions.

George,

Thanks for your response.  It's greatly appreciated.

I was hoping that I could copy the service packs onto the installation CD
instead of using the Office Update.  Some of my clients might not have
broadband and I just feel it's more considerate to give the updates on CD.

To be absolutely honest, I can't understand why MS don't give developers an
update that allows us to produce an "up to date" version of the Run Time -
after all we paid for the developer version shouldn't they keep that up to
date as well.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Di

Paul,

Thanks for taking the time - it's really appreciated.  I followed your link

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?freetext=Microsoft+Access+2002&p
roductID=327F343D-F0D6-4E07-AA53-9656EDB98ADA&DisplayLang=en

and found the following updates:

access2002-runtime-kb813617-client-enu.exe 2719 KB dated  29th April,2003

Access 2002 Runtime Security Patch: KB827430
officexp-kb827430-client-enu.exe    575 KB  dated 3rd Sept, 2003

Am confused even further because I'd been looking at:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/CD010225581033.aspx

and thought I needed the following updates:

Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Access 2002 Runtime
Art2002Sp3-kb834693-client-enu.exe  5274 KB  dated 9th March, 2004

Office XP Security Update: KB832332 officexp-kb832332-v2-client-enu.exe
1251 kb  dated 12th October, 2004

Am not using Multilanguage or SQL so didn't need Access 2002 Update:
KB833857 officexp-kb833857-client-enu.exe     2472 KB  dated 23rd March,
2004 or the MultiLanguage update.

Assume that I install Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Access 2002 Runtime
in lieu of Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) when only installing Access Run
Time.  Also assumed SP3 is an accumulative patch and includes Office XP
Update: Service Pack 1 (SP-1) and Service Pack 2

To add to all this confusion, I formatted a new drive, installed Windows XP
SP1 (without any patches) and then installed my Runtime & program.  Not
another program was installed on the computer.  Logged onto the MS website
and ran the Office Update wizard and was told the only update I needed was
Office XP Service Pack for Access 2002 Runtime.

Do we also need to install Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 (SP8) for Windows XP
(KB829558) and Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8?
It would be lovely to have a definitive answer.  Sorry if my reply is longer
than anticipated will understand if you don't get time to reply.

You definitely need Art2002Sp3-kb834693-client-enu.exe.  As for the others,
they should be updated as part of the OS updates.  The updates for Jet are
OS specific...I believe the same is true for MDAC.  So, unless you want to
write a fancy installer to determine which OS the user is installing on,
you're better off leaving it to the user to do the OS update.  Maybe give
them a notice that they should update their OS.

Thanks so much for your reply.  I know why I stayed so long with Access2
runtimes.

Best wishes

At least there is an update specifically for Access XP runtime.  2003 relies
on a monolithic/bloated SP that is for the entire Office Suite!

If I could reliably package an Access 2003 Run Time I'd upgrade to that but
at the moment I've decided to keep all clients who use an OS earlier than XP
on my old Access 2 program (which still works brilliantly - apart from an
intermittent problem with displaying charts - a known issue when OS is XP)
and only clients who have WinXP or better can upgrade to new AccessXP
version.  Reading some of the probs with Access 2003 I decided to stay with
Access XP but as we both realise there are issues here as well.

Not too satisfactory.

Thanks so much for taking the time with this Paul - it's really appreciated.

Why do you say "only clients who have WinXP or better can upgrade to new
AccessXP"?

According to http://www.microsoft.com/office/previous/xp/sysreqs.asp the
system requirements for Office XP are Win98 or better. Even Office 2003
doesn't require WinXP or better: it'll run on Win 2000, SP3.

It's a support issue.  If your client is remote and, for all you know
doesn't even have internet access, how can you tell them what service packs,
upgrades etc they need if you're catering for multiple OS..

Just thought WinXP was a good close off point.
