I am trying to connect to an MS Access database which is stored on a web
server say http://www.a website.com/db1.mdb. I'd like to read from it and
modify its content. I have trudged through masses of literature on the web
but seem no nearer a solution. My preferred solution is an ActiveX object
created in VB6 which can be called from vbscript within a web page. This
would connect with the database and provide interfaces to read/write data.

Can anyone explain in kindergarten language the best way of achieving this ?

I'm not sure it can be done. Access doesn't recognize the http protocol (nor
the ftp protocol, for that matter). If you can't map to a share on the
server, you may be out of luck.

Carl Prothman has some information about the Microsoft Remote Provider at
http://www.able-consulting.com/MDAC/ADO/Connection/MSRemote.htm

You might be able to get this to work, but read the notes Carl has on that
page: RDS is consider obsolete by Microsoft, and there can be serious
security issues using it.
